Alcoa warns 4th-quarter profit will miss forecasts

NEW YORK, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Alcoa Inc., the world's No. 1 aluminum producer, said it expects its fourth-quarter earnings to be lower than analysts expected as some customers fail to meet the terms of their contracts amid a weakening economy.

Pittsburgh-based Alcoa (NYSE:AA - news) said it expects to make a profit of 10 cents a share excluding a special after-tax charge of $225 million, or 26 cents a share, for restructuring.

Analysts expected the firm to post fourth-quarter earnings of between 20 cents to 37 cents per share, with a consensus of 30 cents per share, according to 15 brokers polled by Thomson Financial/First Call.

David, the P/E and prospects for growth were just as bad" as they are today on September 21, which I think was a great buying opportunity. Valuation is only one side of the equation, others important paramaters include market psychology, liquidity and momentum.
