Andreas, Re: "Since Thorughbred has been confirmed by AMD to be a only "dumb shrink" my guess is that Intel will have the lead until at least the release of Barton."

Two wildcards that continue to make me wonder with AMD is adding extra L2 cache to the Barton design, or increasing the front side bus speed. Both of these sound like easy ways to increase performance, but both also have their caveats. 512KB of L2 will increase the die size of Barton, and perhaps AMD wants to keep it small. Also, a new front side bus specification will require a certain amount of infrastructure support, and maybe AMD will want to wait until Hammer before changing front side bus specs. So I guess AMD holds a few wildcards, but so does Intel. Northwood seems capable of outperforming both Palomino and TBred (if it still is a "dumb shrink" after all this). Northwood with a 533MHz front side bus may perform favorably with Barton, too (if it is also a "dumb shrink"). It seems that 2002 could still go either way for AMD. Also, don't forget that any more delays from AMD could make 2002 considerably more difficult for them.

Andreas, I hope you don't mind, but I want to do a copy/paste of one of your posts from the other thread. It includes quite a lot of good information.
