Ann Taylor is a little more stylish than Talbots...Talbot reaches up to toward the youger grandmothers, and the Ladies -who-lunch St. John's knits crowd. (St. John's is a little pricer than Talbots.)

Professional women who work in say a bank will buy from Talbots. Conservative

Professional women who work for a manufacturer will buy from Ann Taylor & Jones New York. Mainstream.

Professional women who work in advertising will buy from DKNY. Stylish.

Lots of overlap here, typical professional women's closets will have multiple brands. (Don't ask how I know this.)
