King County Grinch Gets Scrooged Monday, Dec. 17, 2001 Ron Sims, executive of leftist-dominated King County, Wash., has made himself a nationwide object of ridicule for trying to censor Christmas. Fed-up folks fought back after the taxpayer-supported bureaucrat decreed that county employees should not publicly acknowledge Christmas and instead refer to some vague "winter celebration" or unnamed holiday. (What's next, will the left-wing thought police start calling Independence Day a "summer celebration"?) King County Councilman Kent Pullen said that thanks to Sims' memo, employees were going out of their way to wish each other a merry Christmas. "My calendar lists Dec. 25 as Christmas Day," he told the Seattle Times. "In our diverse society, most people of different faiths aren't offended when someone wishes them a merry Christmas. "I would be reluctant in our cold, wet, rainy city to wish anyone a happy winter celebration. I'm afraid I'd get a very hostile reaction." Sims' underlings were fuming at the crush of angry letters and e-mails. "They're hysterical," griped spokeswoman Elaine Kraft. "We've received vicious and angry phone calls."
