Juniper Networks Selected by BSES Telecom for its Metropolitan Area Network in Mumbai

Juniper Networks M-series routers enable India's first Ethernet-to-home solutions on BSES Telecom's metro network

New Delhi - December 19, 2001 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, today announced that BSES Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of the power and transmission company BSES Ltd., has selected Juniper Networks M160 and M20 Internet routers for its Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) in Mumbai, India. This deployment is the first Ethernet-to-home solution to be implemented in India and it will enable broadband access to more than 80,000 customers by the end of 2002.

BSES Telecom chief executive officer Guru Hariharan said, "On November 15, we launched our Ethernet-to-home solution, the first to be offered in India. Juniper Networks M-series Internet routers have enabled us to provide innovative services to our customers today and to offer numerous, intelligent IP services using the same platform in the future. We plan to introduce services such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) virtual private networks (VPNs) in the next six to eight months. We chose Juniper Networks to extend our Internet infrastructure based on the inherent ability of its platforms to scale rapidly and perform optimally under any network condition."

Juniper Networks is supplying routers and installing points of presence (POPs) in BSES Telecom's 384km2 MAN in eight prominent suburbs, including Bandra, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, and Kandivali. The implementation of the network in Mumbai will be completed throughout the next six to eight months.

Juniper Networks is working closely with CMS Computers Ltd., one of its partners in India that is responsible for the service, support, and installation of the routing equipment for BSES Telecom.
