Sinn Fein allowances spark angry debate

Sinn Fein MPs are to be allowed to use Westminster services despite furious Tory opposition.

After a bitter and highly charged six-hour debate MPs backed a motion permitting the move.

Several Labour MPs also defied ministers by opposing the motion.

Shadow Northern Ireland secretary Quentin Davies said it was another example of the Government's "endless concession and appeasement of Sinn Fein and the IRA".

He added: "Hardly a week goes by, this week hardly a day goes by, without the announcement of some further concession. This is a deplorable situation."

Under its terms, the four Sinn Fein Members will be allowed access to Commons facilities, services and allowances amounting up to £107,000 a year each without taking the oath. [oath of allegiance to the Queen see link below]

But they will not be allowed to take part in debates or vote.

But Commons Leader Robin Cook insisted the change was "one small contribution" to help move the peace process forward.

"We are more likely to secure further decommissioning if we demonstrate that we are willing to maintain momentum on our side," he told the House.
