Immigration and Jobs: The Process of Displacementnpg.org >> That is the way capitalism works << unfortunately the theories of unfettered capitalism that were taught to you in school are just that--theories. there is no such thing in the real world. every economy needs some form of regulation--the question is how much. our forefathers recognized this; all four presidents on mount rushmore were protectionist. the founding fathers of the constitution recognized this as well, as evidenced by:Article. 1. Section. 8. Clause 3 To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes; just imagine for a minute what it would be like to remove all barriers to labor and capital in our economy. after all, that is what unfettered capitalism is about. we would have to have completely open borders so the cheapest labor could be deployed most efficiently, right? i take it that's what you advocate, since you believe production should seek out the lowest labor costs possible. so just take a minute to imagine in your mind what america would be like when there are 100 mexicans, indians, chinese, indonesians, etc all lined up to do your job for a fraction of the cost. part of the invisible hand guiding capitalism is the law of supply and demand, right? what do you think will happen to the supply of workers in america when we throw our borders open so production can seek out the cheapest labor? mexicans will make a run for the border by the millions to come work here. it doesn't take an economics major to figure out that immigrants pouring in will increase the supply of labor. i hardly think the majority of immigrant slaves coming to america will be opening up their own businesses and creating new jobs. they will be taking existing jobs and driving down wages. >> The people who lose their jobs are redeployed in other areas of the economy which are growing. I am sure a lot of steel workers who lost their jobs retrained as computer technicians etc to find employment. << ahh, this old argument. steel workers and auto workers who are being laid off can just be "redeployed" to other areas. just as easy as a snap of the fingers eh? who is going to pay to train these "redeployed" workers? how are they supposed to support their family in the meantime while you are teaching them (for free?) to program a computer? and what about less capable americans? should minorities and poor people with less access to proper education who therefore have no skills be competing with dollar an hour mexicans? unfortunately all of america is not as educated and capable as you anindo. should they be left out to dry?
