Market Report -- Short Stories (MSFT, EXPD, USAI, EPS, US)
December 19, 2001 3:40:00 PM ET

Microsoft (MSFT) 69.58 +0.31: -- Before Open -- MSFT announced that it now expects the sale of its stake in EXPD (to USAI: sale delayed because of USAI's announced deal with V) to close in March or possibly during its June quarter; firms weigh-in on the sale's impact to earnings. Goldman Sachs' Rick Sherlund expects the sale to result in a pre-tax gain of ~ $650 mln or about $0.08 in EPS; makes no changes to 2002/2003 estimates (of $1.82 and $2.05 respectively) and rates the shares a Recommended List. JP Morgan lowers 2002 estimates for the Dec quarter and moves the expected $0.08 gain to the June quarter; makes no change to the firm's 2002 estimate of $1.84 and rates the stock a Buy. Morgan Stanley remains confident the deal will close and rates MSFT a Market Outperform. In a related note, Soundview slightly raises their revenue estimates for the Dec quarter based on proprietary checks that indicate MSFT US sales for the Dec quarter were at or above plan for the Dec quarter (see today's In-Play for commentary) and rates MSFT a Buy.
