I was told not to upgrade to Windows XP since the provider of a charting software I use has to do a rewrite to make it work with XP. Apparently, the file system is not compatible with Windows 95/98/2000/ME. The best way to resolve the Windows monopoly conundrum is that whenever Microsft releases another operating system, the previous operating system is picked up by another independent company to be supported and sold at a discounted price, like $ 50. This will inject competition and perhaps break the built-in obsolescence strategy that's worse than anything Detroit ever dreamed up.
