Buyers have been less and less willing to pay a significant premium for a chip that is 10% or 20% faster. AMD ran into that problem when the modestly faster AThlon "Gigahertz" chips didn't do as well as hoped relative to AMD and Intel products that were 100MHZ slower.

And if the public had even the slightest clue about the difference between memory types, it would be impossible to sell 90% of the presently available (SDRAM) P4 systems.
