Question: is Sharon going for ethnic cleansing? This does look like the ex Yugoslavia moves....

Short answer: no. The Israelis wouldn't stand for it, and even if they did, world opinion would fall on them like a ton of bricks. Sharon believes that Israel projected near-fatal weakness during Oslo, and he wants to correct that, to make the Arabs give up on terrorizing and demoralizing Israel. He also wants Arafat and the PA dead and gone, and he is maneuvering for room to achieve this, step by step. He has to move very carefully, lest at any step he lose a) Peres, the left wing of his government, b) the right wing of his government, c) the permission (tacit or overt) of the United States. Beyond that I don't know and I'm not sure if Sharon does either.

Is there a secret dream in Israel of having a convenient underclass whether it's Palestinians or some kinda Jews who aren't quite as good as the other kind?

Convenient? What's convenient about workers you can't hire without getting daily suicide bombers alongside of them? The Israelis used to hire Palestinians. Now, they've imported half a million Rumanians and other Eastern Europeans instead.

Friedman is reliable. He's a real reporter and he's got no time for Arafat and the rest of the creepoids, either.

I stand by my slant comments and will be glad to go through them point by point.
