Verizon unfortunately exhibits all the worst traits of a former monopoly wired phone service provider. They have no concept of entrepreneurial motivation and instead think that the only way to expand is to gain near monopoly control over their trade area. This is the old fashioned phone company attitude.

Contrast this with Cricket service provided by Leap Wireless. Cricket is hitting Verizon in the soft underbelly--taking away WIRED phone customers by offering wireless service at competitive local rates. As for PCS, I have never been terribly impressed with their management quality, but I do think at the very least they will be inclined to offer a far greater range of wireless services than Verizon in the next few years. Verizon keeps on thinking in terms of control over its market area, which means concentrating NOT on the variety of services but on dominating the basic service in order to try and keep out intruders. No matter how you cut it, they're just a bunch of old phone company types who are not ready to concede that their wired systems and utility poles are rapidly becoming obsolete.
