Hi Kemble,

Did you see the news release today that said Dell is claiming that home pc sales will be down 21% this year? To offset this downturn, Dell has opened Kiosks at a number of Malls, and has started selling pc's on cable shopping channels.

The other day, I say Dell pc's being sold on the Home Shopping Network.

Seems that Dell is going down the same path as GTW with respect to opening retail stores. Please note, I'm not saying that a Kiosk is the same as a retail store like the one's that GTW opened. However, in principle, I think they are the same.

Patrick,
Hi!!

A good friend of mine sent me this...Had anyone seen this prediction? WOW!!

RE: digitimes.com

Dell’s increased notebook procurement may signal strong competition for Taiwan TFT LCD production capacity

From Chinese DigiTimes, translated by Shih-wei Kao, DigiTimes.com [Monday 17 December 2001]

The Commercial Times Chinese-language newspaper reported on December 14 that Dell Computer plans to purchase 5.8 million notebooks from Taiwan next year, up 70% from this year, and is actively seeking to secure Taiwan’s TFT LCD production capacity. This seems to suggest a strong recovery of the world’s notebook PC market is unfolding.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Market Intelligence Center (MIC) recently predicted Taiwan would experience 88% growth in LCD monitor shipments next year.

Considering Taiwan TFT LCD production capacity is already somewhat strained even after three price hikes, it seems that global TFT LCD demand and competition for Taiwan’s TFT LCD production capacity by downstream industries will be very strong next year.

Dell, which has been acquiring notebook panels from Samsung Electronics, reportedly is seeking to conclude deals for 15-inch high-end notebook displays with Taiwan-based HannStar Display, Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) and Quanta Display.
