Yeah, I had this crazy thought that maybe they just didn't spend as much time getting obese in front of their TVs with pints of Ben & Jerry's — that they might even be out riding a bicycle more often than the average sedentary American. Nah, it's definitely the wine.

Speaking of: taste buds are always happy to take a break from standard fare. Instead of Zins this weekend, pick up a nice Barbera for a change. Cascina Castlèt offers four different ones with rather confusing Italian nomenclature. I'll quickly simplify it:

For a lighter, cherry-fruited, "fresh" taste in the $9/btl price range, get this one, the "Four Chix on a Vespa Scooter": musicaperilpalato.com

A more complex, spicy version (nearly creamy with cinnamon overtones) that is worth serving for dinner guests enjoying your best lamb stew, get the "Passum" ($20/btl): musicaperilpalato.com
