To say gold is a moot investment is a huge generalization that is impossible to support. The mere existance of a market for gold and gold shares proves that statement conclusivly false. You talk of G7 controll over exchange rates. The dollar may appear to be controlled, but it is hardly a "stable" currency when looked at over a period of more than a year.Look at its relation to the euro and pound over the last 2 years.Markets dont like controll they like stability.I'm betting, but not the boat, that controll is being lost.

Why write calls on bank stocks? Why not, write calls on anything besides technology?
Writing calls on technology might be okay too if they don't completely tank again.
