Authorities Say Body With Identification of Missing Scientist Found in Louisiana The Associated Press Published: Dec 20, 2001 MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A body carrying the identification of a missing Harvard University scientist was found Thursday in the Mississippi River, about 300 miles south of where the man was last seen. Police Lt. Joe Scott said a positive identification will be made after the body, discovered near a hydroelectric plant in Vidalia, La., is returned to Memphis for an autopsy. A wallet on the body carried the name of Don C. Wiley, a molecular biologist whose abandoned rental car was found Nov. 16 on a Mississippi River bridge in Memphis. The keys were in the ignition and the tank full of gas. Wiley had been in Memphis for a two-day annual meeting of the scientific advisory board of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital of Memphis. He had served on for about 10 years. Police considered the matter a missing persons case and had said it might have been a suicide. Wiley was last seen Nov. 15 just before midnight at a St. Jude's dinner at a hotel about a 15-minute drive from the bridge. The car was found a few hours later. Wiley is an expert on how the human immune system fights off infections and had recently investigated such dangerous viruses as AIDS, Ebola, herpes and influenza. ap.tbo.com
