You make a good point: public K-12 education has gone downhill in quality for decades, and now is - at best - only 'poor' when measured against objective criteria:

But, on your other point (increasing the spreading of wealth throughout all the population) I think that wonderful historical characteristic of the U.S. has slowed down, or reversed.
