Garcia a game-time decision for 49ers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Jeff Garcia took several snaps during the San Francisco 49ers' practice Thursday, but remains a game-time decision for Saturday's game against Philadelphia.

On Wednesday, Garcia was downgraded to questionable status with a rib injury.

Garcia still expects to play on Saturday, but the 49ers kept him out of practice Wednesday to rest the sprained cartilage in his ribs. The injury made it difficult for Garcia to throw during the second half of San Francisco's win over Miami last Sunday.

Garcia, injured while falling on the ball on the 49ers' final play of the first half against the Dolphins, was listed as probable after the game. The new designation officialy means there's a 50 percent chance Garcia will miss the game, but Garcia doesn't plan on sitting out.

"There's not a question in my mind that I'll play, but it's something that's going to be a day-to-day type of thing," Garcia said. "It's sore today, but it's not any more sore than it was yesterday. I'm making sure I'm going to be sharp and crisp when I do get out there for practice."

Garcia, who has followed his Pro Bowl campaign in 2000 with an even stronger season, has 2,910 yards passing and 25 touchdown passes. He is the NFL's fourth-rated quarterback behind Rich Gannon, Kurt Warner and Brett Favre.

With a playoff berth already clinched and the division title nearly out of reach, coach Steve Mariucci said preserving Garcia's health for the postseason was just as important as another victory.

Though Garcia should play on Saturday, Mariucci might rest Garcia at some point in the regular season's final three games.

"He's determined to play, obviously," Mariucci said. "If he practices, he's functional, and he can throw the ball and feel good about it, we'll be in there."

Garcia said his sore knee, which limited his mobility earlier in the season and required the use of a brace, is nearly back to full strength. Garcia's mobility is one of his greatest strengths, but he has rushed for just 22 yards in the 49ers' last seven games.

Tim Rattay, Garcia's second-year backup, hasn't thrown a pass this year. He worked with the first-team offense in practice on Wednesday, however.

"It's good work for Tim, because he hasn't had a lot of opportunity to do it," Mariucci said.

The 49ers also rested receiver Terrell Owens, who hasn't practiced regularly on Wednesday in recent weeks because of injuries to both feet. Three other starters also rested: defensive end John Engelberger (heel), tackle Scott Gragg (thigh) and linebacker Jeff Ulbrich (left ankle).
