Surely there are ethical limits or are you willing to turn a blind eye to genocide in America's best interests?

I wouldn't turn a blind eye toward the Armenian massacre, Cambodia, Rwanda, the disappeared in several South & Central America locations, the Indian wars in this country, and other similar instances.

But other than the events in two refugee camps, which I'd call 'criminal atrocities', I can't concur with applying the genocide label to Sharon. Considering what has been offered in peace initiatives, and that Israel armed the Palestinian police forces, and that the principal aim of the Israelis have sought is to live peacefully without being exterminated by Jew-haters, the comparison does not seem apt to me.

Sharon may be guilty of war crimes, but genocide would not stick. And I'd say an equally strong case can be applied to Arafat, whose own exhortations and policies don't even try to hide genocidal intent.

On the larger question, where to draw the line in determining friends and foes, and levels of support, remains the reason Foreign Affairs merits constant discussion.... in pursuit of better mousetraps to build.

Certainly, it requires we look backward, to where we've been. But for the most effective policies, choices going forward are central to life sustenance and quality, while punishing those current leaders we wish to influence has never been a particularly successful approach.
