Pressure on Arafat Does Not Bring Results
(IsraelNationalNews) Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has been under intense US and Israeli pressure to crack down on terrorist attacks. The pressure has been even stronger since the recent wave of suicide bombing attacks, which killed 26 and caused a plethora of serious injuries. The pressure has brought no physical results, as Arafat claims he risks stirring internal dissent by doing so.
Since the beginning of the Palestinian uprising in September 2000, at least 233 Israelis have been killed.
The United States and European Union Wednesday reaffirmed their common approach on the Middle East conflict, after recent discussions over how best to handle Arafat.
Arafat has verbally outlawed the military wings of Hamas and other groups and called for an end to suicide bombings and armed attacks on Israelis. However, Ha’aretz reported that on Thursday there had been no decision to suspend suicide attacks on Israelis in order to ease diplomatic pressure on Palestinian Authority Chairman President Yasser Arafat.
"Let me say clearly and in order to dispel the confusion…: Hamas and the other forces have absolutely not called an end to the operations," Hamas politburo head Khaled Meshal told a conference in Beirut.
