>>GREENSBORO, N.C., Jan 3, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD chart, msgs), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, announced today that it has begun production in its second Gallium Arsenide Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (GaAs HBT) fabrication facility (fab), which is used to fabricate semiconductor wafers.

The new fab is located in Greensboro, NC on the Company's headquarters campus.

The new fab is currently equipped to produce up to approximately 25,000 to 40,000 wafers per year. When the second fab is fully equipped and operating at full capacity it is expected to be capable of producing the equivalent of approximately 210,000 four-inch wafers per year, bringing the projected capacity of the Company's two GaAs HBT fabs to the equivalent of approximately 270,000 four-inch wafers per year.

The production schedule for the second fab is programmable, and the Company plans to continue equipping the second fab consistent with demand.

David A. Norbury, president and chief executive officer of RF Micro Devices, said, "We expect this new facility will help us to serve and further diversify our customer base as it strengthens our technology leadership and contributes to ongoing reductions in cycle times."

"The new fab has not only contributed to the addition of new customers, it has also been instrumental in the development of recent strategic relationships that represent incremental revenue opportunities for the Company," said Jerry Neal, executive vice president of sales, marketing and strategic development of RF Micro Devices.

RF Micro Devices is an industry leader in GaAs HBT and is the world's largest manufacturer of GaAs HBT semiconductors, which operate at higher frequencies and with better power efficiency than conventional silicon-based semiconductors, making them ideal for certain high-frequency wireless communications applications, such as power amplifiers for wireless phones.<<

This is nice, and together with JP MOrgan's bullish SOX call this morning, it got RFMD north of $22 for a brief moment. But it isn't sales yet. Looking to rehedge the unhedged portion on a litle further strength.

Cheers, Tuck

Hi tuck. my holidays were very enjoyable, I trust yours were equally enjoyable.

IMO, it's not a difficult thing for longs and shorts to get aslong. In one aspect we need each other to keep the other thinking. Anyhow, I did ride the earnings wave down for a few days and some spare change. Currently flat now, but hoping for a move to the mid 19s again on some euphoric hype.

As far as the other positions, yes, I did reshort NVDA(for the umteenth time) and am doing okay so far on it. I'm also still short BRCM and may consider holding some if not all through earnings. I'm also comfortably short VRTS again but picked up a small long position in chkp, which is just s shy better than my entry. Oh, and my favorite, CIEN, I'm contimplating covering that one soon, but I sure would like to see it dribble into the low 9s first. Even there, I would not want to keep it long in the face of a potential naz melt down. I think their recovery is at least 9 months to 18 months in the future. So it would be more of a mo mo play.

Good luck.
