Tokyo stocks end down with Toshiba touching 15-year low

sg.biz.yahoo.com

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks ended lower on Friday, knocked back by a slide in Toshiba Corp and other major high-tech shares after their U.S. peers tumbled amid investor concerns a recovery for the sector may come later than planned.

The benchmark Nikkei average fell 0.95 percent or 99.07 points to 10,335.45, while the broader TOPIX index shed 0.49 percent or 4.95 points to 1,007.52.

Toshiba, Japan's top producer of chips, fell 3.81 percent to 429 yen after hitting a fresh 15-year low of 419.

Tokyo Electron Ltd <8035>, a maker of chip-manufacturing equipment, plunged 8.84 percent to 6,290 yen after networking heavyweight Juniper Networks gave an earnings warning that helped push the tech-laden Nasdaq down 3.25 percent.

"Investors moved to take profits ahead of the long weekend and as the year winds to a close," said Hirokazu Yuihama, senior strategist at Daiwa Institute of Research.

"I'm pessimistic about consumer spending in the U.S. and I think the market is worried about how it will hold up through the end of the Christmas shopping season."
