And the argument will be that it is not the energy sector being regulated. It's the energy trading sector that will be regulated. No matter that they're for all practical purposes they're the same thing.

You will hear within two months some line o' crap out of Washington like "We're all for deregulating energy, just not the way it was done in California. We're all for a free and open energy trading market, just not the way Enron did it. We're going to solve both of these problems with a simple system of federal oversight combining the efficient and competent oversights of DOE and the SEC. This WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN on our watch. Oh, and please remember to re-elect me in November. Thank you very much."

The only thing that may (may) keep it from happening is the combined Bush/Cheney effect, but there may be too high a political price to pay for them to stop it.

I would love to be wrong, but there's my .02.
