NYSE short interest makes new high in December

NEW YORK, Dec 20 (Reuters) -- Short interest on the New
York Stock Exchange, the world's largest equity market, rose in
the month ended Dec. 14 to a new high, the Big Board said on
Thursday.
Short interest rose to 6.448 billion shares from 6.274
billion shares sold short in the period ended Nov. 15, an
increase of 173.4 million shares. The December figure
represented 1.9 percent of the total shares traded on the
exchange. The Dec. 14 month reflects transactions through Dec.
11.
Short selling occurs when investors sell borrowed shares
with the hope of buying back the stock at a lower price,
returning the stock and profiting from the difference. If
stocks start to rally, short sellers are often forced to buy
back into the market to reduce losses, propelling prices even
higher.
Short sellers opened positions of 100,000 or more shares
for companies including: Alamosa Holdings Inc. <APS.N>, Aramark
Worldwide Corp. <.RMK>, and Weight Watchers International Inc.
<WTW.N>.
The following is a table of the 10 biggest short positions
held for the month ended Dec. 14, ranked in descending order:

Sprint PCS Group <PCS.N> 152
Global Crossing <GX.N> 120
