Harold,

You should disable any Virus protection software running when downloading and installing new programs. Look at the lower right corner of your task bar. One of the icons should be for your virus protection software. Either right click or double click on the icon to open it. Somewhere you should have to option to disable it.

Then go to the Microsoft Windows update page at:
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and select "Product Updates".

One of the updates should be for your version Internet Explorer. Download and install the update. Since you were having problems with IE6, avoid that particular version.

Let's go back to square 1. Are you running win2000 or win98? Installing Win2000 on top of a bad win98 is not IMO what you need to do. Have you updated the virus definitions lately? Have you scanned for viruses? Have you run scandisk? Have you ever defragged? Have you ever cleaned all your temp files? We can walk you through a bunch of things to make your machine run better step by step.
