The study, which measures visitor traffic to online sellers' Web sites, listed Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple as the fifth leading e-tailer in November, with 6.1 million visitors. The high ranking reflects sales gains by Apple's Web store. The company reported that online sales accounted for 43 percent of its revenue for the fourth quarter ended Sept. 29, up from 40 percent in the third quarter and 26 percent in the fourth quarter of 2000. Among other computer vendors in the ranking, Dell finished seventh with 5.7 million visitors, HP came in ninth with 5.2 million visitors, and Compaq finished 15th with 3.7 million visitors. Amazon was the No. 1 e-tailing site in November, with 31.5 million visitors, according to the study. Rounding out the top 10 were Columbia House (8.7 million visitors), Toys R Us (7.6 million), Barnes & Noble (6.2 million), Best Buy (6 million), Wal-Mart (5.7 million) and Sears (4.9 million). In terms of online market reach, Apple's total Web visitors represented 5.2 percent of all Internet users that month, compared with 4.9 percent for Dell, 4.4 percent for HP and 3.1 percent for Compaq. The Nielsen/NetRatings study excludes Web sites with less than 25 percent of their traffic engaged in shopping online. Since the e-business boom of the late 1990s, solution providers have kept a close watch on hardware and software vendors' online businesses. Vendors offering attractive discounts online often take business away from partners--since many of the sales are direct--and give customers more leverage in negotiating price breaks with solution providers, channel executives say.
