I certainly don't shed any tears for them about the breakup. The case has been made that it was the best thing that could have happened to them (and that they--Standard Oil management) even knew it at the time, as it allowed the parts to grow faster than the whole would have done. Plus, as I dimly recall, JD's family still maintained effective control over the parts, but I forget offhand how that worked.
