ECRI weekly index slips in Dec 14 week

NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - A weekly index of U.S. economic activity slipped slightly but remained at levels that suggest the economy may be on the verge of pulling out of its recession, the Economic Cycle Research Institute said on Friday.

ECRI's Weekly Leading Index edged down to 118.8 in the week ended Dec. 14 from 119.1 in the previous week. The index hit a 4-1/2 year low during the week ended Oct. 19 at 113.9.

Declining mortgage applications and stock prices weighed on the index, offsetting a drop in jobless claims and a reduction in the risk spread between high and low quality corporate bonds.

``The important thing to note is that this index is significantly above its October lows, which means we've seen an advance so far that is reasonably pronounced and pervasive. But it's not persistent enough for us to definitely say that we have a recovery ahead,'' said Anirvan Banerji, ECRI research director.

The index's growth rate, which compares the four-week moving average with its behavior over the preceding year, edged higher for the seventh straight week to -1.5 percent from -2.4 in the prior week.

The Weekly Leading Index is composed of a balance of seven major economic indicators. ECRI designs short- and long-term indexes aimed at predicting business cycles, recessions and recoveries in the world's leading economies.

Hi Dealer: I can remember telling our friends at the Porch Party that one day we will get together again and tell success stories.

I still believe that.

I also mentioned my firm belief that we will not fail.

I still belive that.

Like I said then, and still believe now, so long as one does not quit, has the determination and drive to seek excellence, they will not fail.

I believe things will get better, that everyone will get back on their feet, learn from these experiences, and do better than before for having endured what they just came through.

One day, we will get together again, and tell success stories.

Happy Holidays my Friends!

RR
