"culture shock". it normally appears 6-9 months after total immersion in a strange culture.

Yes! The time frame seems absolutely universal - the exciting novelty wears off (or thin...), yet Everything You Know Is Still Wrong. The other plateau seems to be at about 2-3 years where you finally get comfortable enough that day to day activities are no longer always stressful. Unfortunately it's at that point that the typical foreign business relo ends, about like making the business trip abroad and leaving for home around the time jet lag has worn off. But it's an experience that money almost can't buy.

I now have immense respect for people coming to live in the US from much more radically different cultures than I was exposed to (western Europe) and who integrate themselves without going postal. An ethnic community is a great help in this regard.

I went through this when I moved to rural Florida from Oregon.
