Dear Fyo:

Actually, many of those new mainframe systems use clusters within. The CPU is a node, the memory is a node, the I/O is a node, storage is a node and so on. Lose one or some of each, and the system network continues to work. Enough margin (actual peak resources minus required resources dividing the whole result by actual peak resources) and the loss of a portion will not stop the usability of the whole. That is true 24/7 operation (just do not locate it all in the same place to guard against disasters). For the obvious example look at the telephone network or the electric grid. Dispersion reduces failure but, when it finally does occur, it is a big event (we forget it is not perfect, quite easily).
