Joe Smith: It is instructive to see the history of the first week in January under the "Stock Ticker" archives of Briefing.com. The one thing I DID notice is that the first business (trading) day in January the past two years has been brutal (tank job). Perhaps this represents delayed selling by investors who wanted to defer tax consequences and chose to sell and book profits at the beginning of the New Year.
