Since nearly all of us on this thread trade Nasdaq stocks, I've been addressing the Nasdaq when referring to the January effect.

On Dec. 31 1997 the Nas closed at 1570. On the last trading day of January it closed at 1619. Hardly a great gain, but it was still up. Hence, another up January.
