Joseph, I would fly 24-hours a day (and sometimes need to). It is safer than any form of transportation when you calculate deaths per miles traveled.

It is incredibly safe. If you are worried about a terrorist, take a laptop with you. You can knock someone out with it. Order the headphones if you're in coach, as you can strangle someone with them. Buy some whiskey so you can crack the bottles and slash someone's neck. Bring a pen so you can stab them in the throat.

Actually, those are all weapons anyone can use on any flight.

Anyway, I can't understand how some people are so fearful when they are more likely to die on the toilet than on a plane.

Joseph, cockpit doors were fortified early on, and airline pilots I know have said that they don't plan on opening those doors to terrorists no matter what is going on in the cabin. That may seem like cold comfort to the passengers, but it does virtually eliminate the danger of having the whole plane flown into a building, or into the ground.

Another thing that has changed is that they are no longer allowing short-bladed knives like the ones used on Sept. 11th.

You can also take comfort from the fact that, as today's incident shows, the cabin crew and your fellow passengers are unlikely to meekly allow hijackers to achieve their ends.
