"Like i said in my original post, the VIX is good at calling bottoms but so-so when it comes to tops. It's probably best when used with other indicators, but at bottoms it does a decent job by itself."

I think that is right on. Buying long positions on vix spikes with the expectancy of holding for 2 months or more looks like a very solid idea. But looking for a top on vix readings below 23 or so has not been a good idea at all, until recently. However, getting out when the vix trend line has turned up has been a great idea for at least 15 years. You do miss some of the top.

Another indicator of interest: the 200 day ma is within days of turning up.
