Globe says analysts expect Nortel to grow in 2002

Thu 10 Jan 2002

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 10, edition that Nortel
Networks was recommended Wednesday by a team of Scotia Capital market
watchers. The Globe's Caroline Alphonso writes that Scotia Capital analyst
Andy MacLean says this year holds much promise for Nortel. "Nortel still
has the best products and is positioning itself fairly well for growth in
wireless network," says Mr. MacLean. "I think in this market you can use
the volatility that we're seeing to your advantage," he says. "So on
pullbacks, on negative news, that's what I would use as entry points for
tech." In a survey of 71 managers conducted by Towers Perrin, Nortel was
cited most frequently. Mr. MacLean says valuations for Nortel have pulled
back to "more reasonable levels" and the stock will likely move up to the
high teens by the end of the year. Among technology stocks, Mr. MacLean
favours Nortel and Microsoft. Nortel stock slipped eight cents to close
Wednesday at $12.91. The stock has risen 8 per cent since the start of
2002.

Globe says Nortel takes aim at enterprise business

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, May 20, edition that Nortel
Networks is launching a new large-scale attack on a traditional market as
the firm continues its search for a comeback trail. The Globe's Simon Tuck
writes that Nortel is adding fresh resources and focus to its enterprise
business. That operation offers corporate customers a wide-ranging
portfolio of products, allowing them to use and link their telephones,
computers and other telecommunications devices. Nortel says it is aiming to
emerge from a pack of about a handful of large industry players to become
No. 2 in the lucrative enterprise market behind Cisco Systems. Nortel's
efforts to boost its enterprise business include key new additions to its
product portfolio, a new advertising campaign and 60 new sales channels in
the past 90 days. The early returns are strong, with positive reviews and
big contract wins from the likes of Home Depot and International Business
Machines. Frank Plastina, president of Nortel's metro and enterprise
networks business, says Nortel lost sight of its enterprise business in
recent years as the company's outrageously successful fibre optics business
soared in the late-1990s.

NP says Nortel Networks could go bankrupt

Fri 5 Jul 2002

The National Post reports in its Friday, July 5, edition that a new study
says Nortel Networks' sales and operating earnings look likely to fall
short of bank covenants and the company will be forced into another round
of job cuts. The Post's Ian Karleff writes that Rosen & Associates analyst
Mark Rosen issued a 12-page report on Nortel in partnership with Caldwell
Securities Thursday detailing the predicament the telecom equipment vendor
is facing, despite a recent, and highly dilutive, financing that has seen
the shares pushed down to 16-year lows. "They could be faced with another
spiral situation. It's really up to a recovery in the industry. There is
nothing they can do to spark that. They will need a few bankruptcies in the
industry among competitors to spark this," said Mr. Rosen, adding that
Nortel itself could fall victim. Barring bankruptcy, Mr. Rosen concludes
more job cuts or additional financing will be necessary if Nortel is to
survive, as the company edges "close to the market's liquidity comfort
level by the end of 2003." Legg Mason analyst Timm Bechter figures the
market is already pricing Nortel stock with even odds on a bankruptcy.

NP says more job cuts and charges loom for Nortel

The National Post reports in its Saturday, Aug. 31, edition that Gimme
Credit analyst Carol Levenson, in a note to institutional investors, says
Nortel Networks will likely face more job cuts, take an $800-million (U.S.)
restructuring charge and be forced to restructure its bank covenants. The
Post's Robert Thompson writes that Ms. Levenson's note follows last week's
earnings warning from Nortel, which did not refer to the charges it would
face for its proposed restructuring. Nortel said only that it would come in
$270-million (U.S.) short of its financial guidance for its third quarter
ended Sept. 30. Ms. Levenson, however, says she expects the charge to be in
the range of $600-million (U.S.) to $800-million (U.S.), half of which is
expected to be in cash. Ms. Levenson says even after the announced job cuts
and if sales stabilize, Nortel will not make money in the third quarter.
She says, "This implies even more restructuring ahead." Unnamed sources
tell the Post that another 5,000 to 7,500 jobs may be cut by the end of the
year. Also, Ms. Levenson believes Nortel's earnings targets will be tough
to achieve and will likely lead to the firm renegotiating its bank
covenants.

Globe/Reuters say Merrill cuts Nortel cash outlook

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Sept. 11, edition that a
Merrill Lynch Canada study says Nortel Networks' cash cushion at the end of
2003 will have significantly less padding after the firm pays for staff
cuts and discontinued operations. A Reuters News Agency dispatch to The
Globe reports that Merrill analyst Tom Astle slashed his forecast for
Nortel's projected cash position at the close of 2003 to $992-million from
$2-billion (all figures U.S.). The revision comes after factoring in higher
costs for Nortel's latest round of job cuts. Previous estimates were based
on calculations of $60,000 in costs per employee, but that increased to
$90,000 because this round of cuts affects more senior staff, the analyst
wrote. Mr. Astle trimmed his estimate for Nortel's cash position at the end
of 2002 to $2.66-billion from $3-billion. He estimates Nortel will take a
cash charge of $589-million in 2002 to cover layoffs and discontinued
operations, and will take another $1.1-billion charge in 2003. Mr. Astle
said cash levels at Nortel should be carefully monitored, but he suggested
the company has adequate liquidity, at least until the end of 2003.
