Niceguy767 - You wrote Yields can't be too bad if AMD is shipping record units...
Your logic leaves something to be desired. AMD is also manufacturing record numbers of wafers - in the industry, I believe the expression they use is "throwing silicon at the problem".
Otherwise, AMD should be making money. AMD management spends inordinate amounts of time touting their smaller die sizes and their large number of wafers used at their two wafer mega-plants.
Do the math - and you'll reach the only possible conclusion - AMD is running horrible yields. In fact, their yields are so low that they are abandoning their own manufacturing for some of their products and going to overseas manufacturers. That's hardly a testimonial to good yields - wouldn't you agree?

You wrote Speaking of yield problems, I'd be highly concerned as an INTC shareholder about the shortage of top end p4's
No shortage that I can see. Our lab just installed 15 Sony Vaio 2 GHz Pentium 4 machines - and the Internet sales outlets have plenty in stock (several technicians in the lab have built their own for home use). One thing that is in short supply, and you have duly noted it, is the availability of PCs in the retail stores with Athlon XP processors. They simply aren't anywhere that we can find.
