Gringo is definitely an insult.

It may be an insult, but it is effective in its clarity. Besides, "Norteamericanos" is even less clear than "Americans." Canadians and Mexicans are technically Norteamericanos, as well. Clarity is definitely a problem given the name of our country. I prefer lack of sensitivity to lack of clarity. But, as X would say, that's just me. My point was simply that lack of clarity is inherent to the name of our country.
