As opposed to "wait 'til Northwood" or "wait 'til McKinley." How about, "wait 'til Thoroughbred" or wait 'til Barton?" In this dreary economy, we're all looking forward to something better. My biggest concern is that next year's huge overcapacity from both Intel and AMD will make it very hard to avoid a brutal price war. And any price war next year would be exacerbated by Dell + small shops dominating where in previous years Compaq + HP + IBM dominated - particularly in the corporate sector. The Dell/Small shop business model lets the customer configure a high end machine with a 2 notch down CPU, which sqeezes the out high margin CPUs. The Compaq/HP model forced buyers to pay for top end CPUs to get a full feature set. Each CPU that sold for an extra $250 last year had the effect of raising the ASPs of a mix that included 9 low end CPUs by $25. Intel used to sell a lot of desktop CPUs for $500 that were aimed at fairly ordinary tasks. Next year, CPUs sold into that segment may only bring in $250. AMD's share of that market was miniscule, so it won't directly impact them very much, but when Intel has to lower prices, it puts pressure on AMD. If Intel is willing to sit on half its capacity, and watch AMD maintain or modestly grow its market share, both companies could have a prosperous and profitable new year, otherwise, look out below. I put the chances of Intel sitting on idle capacity while AMD grows market share at something less than 1 in a million.... :-( Whatever, it's only stocks, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
