Speaking of Carter, it seems he had gained a certain legitimacy in many parts of the world as an ambassador-without-portfolio, post-Presidency. His role disappeared during the Clinton admin, which I always attributed to personal jealousy (Or was his effectiveness less than it appeared publicly?)

However, after Iran, was Carter never able to establish legitimacy in the Arab Muslim world?
