IDF chases Palestinian gunmen into Jenin; 1 Palestinian killed

By Amos Harel, Ha'aretz Correspondent, Ha'aretz Service and agencies

IDF troops have left Jenin after one Palestinian killed and two others injured in a gunbattle Wednesday afternoon between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen who entrenched themselves in a home in the West Bank town of Jenin.

Three Israeli Border Police officers sustained light injuries in the shootout.

The decision to withdraw from the West Bank city was made after an agreement was reached according to which PA security officials will arrest the Palestinian gunmen inside the Jenin home.

An IDF helicopter fired the shots that killed the Palestinian, a 50-year-old man who was nearby but apparently was not a member of the Palestinian gunmen in the home. One of the two Palestinians injured is a Palestinian security officer who is in serious condition.

IDF soldiers entered the Palestinian Authority-controlled land in Jenin on Wednesday in pursuit of the Palestinian gunmen who had fired on them near a settlement. Palestinian media is reporting that the IDF is still in the area, but that the gunfire has stopped.

The incident began when IDF soldiers saw a group of Palestinians apparently en route to a terrorist attack near the Jenin-area settlement of Ganim. The army said the Palestinians began shooting, prompting an exchange of fire.

The Palestinians then fled. The soldiers pursued them to a house in a northeast sector of Jenin. The troops surrounded the house, opening fire with small arms. An IDF tank unit called to the scene then fired two tank shells at the house, Army Radio reported.

One Border Patrol officer was lightly injured by bullet fragments, yet there was no immediate word of Palestinian casualties.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Shin Bet Security Service disclosed that it had arrested three Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) cells. The cells had carried out shooting attacks in the West Bank, Israeli sources said. The arrests were made in the villages of Bitta, Haras and Odallah, located between Nablus and Qalqilyah.

According to the report the suspects have admitted to carrying out three shooting attacks on Israeli vehicles and attempting to place a roadside bomb. There were no injuries in any of these attacks.

Palestinian sources reported Wednesday that IDF special forces entered the West Bank village of Azun, in the Qalqilyah region, and arrested 17 residents including a number of Fatah activists and three members of the Palestinian General Intelligence.

The IDF said in response that a number of those arrested were suspected of terror activities.

Three Palestinians were injured in overnight clashes with the IDF near the Gaza Strip city of Rafah.

Overnight, the IDF lifted the blockade on the West Bank town of Jericho morning, however Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer has ordered the army to take up positions near the town.

The IDF imposed blockades on Jericho and other Palestinian cities after a spate of deadly suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Haifa killed 26 people in early December.

Israel says the blockades are necessary to prevent further attacks on its cities, while the Palestinians charge that the restrictions are collective punishment.

Haim,
It sounds as if things are more quiet in Israel than they were a few weeks ago, what is your sense of things? How do people feel about the ban on Arafat's going to Bethlehem? In the US, it's getting only minor coverage from CNN -- Israel banned Arafat's going; Israel got criticized by everybody, including FM Peres; Arafat stayed put. But even to CNN it's not a major deal.

Daniel Pipes ran an article a few days ago where he said Israel might be winning the test of wills; what do you think?

Feeling Better Now? Heh heh heh......

You know... honest Injun... I figured things would bounce around a little like this. All the scepticism and reports of things going haywire leading up to Jan 1 were enevitable , well to mois anywho.

The longer things run a smooth course , the more credibility the E will gain , among many other issues at hand today...such as this thread's header. ( there..I'm NOT off topic <g>)

So my little " early " remark was with reference to these " thoughts ".

FWIW : I believe the E could reach towards 95 before all is said and done in the next three to six months...BWTFDIK !!!

Regards Haim....
