Retailers expect post-Christmas sales boost

Retailers on track for Christmas sales boost

Australia's retailers expect consumers will spend around $1 billion at post-Christmas sales across the nation this week.

The chief executive officer of the Australian Retailers Association, Phil Naylor, says everything appears to be on track for an anticipated 4.5 per cent increase in sales over December.

The rise would equal a spend of $17.5 billion.

Mr Naylor says most of that money is spent in the lead up to Christmas but retailers are hopeful the post Christmas sales will provide the icing on the cake.

However, he says the extraordinary contrast in weather patterns across the country and the New South Wales bushfires may mean a sluggish start to the sales week.

"The post Christmas sales go for a week or so, so it's not a one day affair and I think over the time it'll be fairly solid trading," Mr Naylor said.
