FWIW I was shopping for my wife on the 24th here in NJ. Last year I had to park across the street from the mall and walk in. This year, I had no trouble finding parking within 20 ft of the mall. The mall I went to has a lot of high end stores, not my type of place, but in a pinch you can always find something fast. I don't know about the rest of the country but there is NO doubt we are feeling the slowdown here.

The mall and the mega-Borders were definitely not as busy this weekend as they were at the same time last year. Sales and large markdowns occurred everywhere - particularly in clothing stores. Although the mall traffic was high, there were no lines at the cash registers at most stores- the exceptions being Williams-Sonoma and Victoria's Secret. In other words, what I experienced was what I would expect to find during a recession- food and sex will get a bid, no matter how bad things get...<g>
