The banks give their middle managers a certain freedom to operate which can be and is abused from time to time. If you believe that management ever allows this abuse to get to disaster levels especially in this era, you don't know how conservative the banks have become. They are so conservative that they confound the FED's ability to implement monetary policy. They can't be led to drink.

The banks are incomparably better run than they ever were. In fact, the big banks are great investments and timely now for pension funds. Without a doubt they will beat most stocks and they have dividends. Does that mean they won't fluctuate? No. Probably next year they will pullback and that will be the opportunity to buy the fact that they make money.
