Excerpt:

The European Parliament's Nicole Fontaine, EU's Javier Solanas and Chris Patten, and numerous leaders of major European political blocks met Massoud in Strasbourg and in Brussels, voicing their support and recognition of the Afghan side represented by the legendary chieftain. For his part, Massoud told journalists in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, last Tuesday that the Europeans officially recognized his political side and agreed to exert real pressure on Pakistan to cease its support of the Taliban.

Meanwhile, in Washington, a spokesman for the US Department of State - reacting for the first time to Massoud's call on President George W. Bush, during a press conference in Paris, to define a clear policy toward Afghanistan and exert pressure on Pakistan in the same way the US applied pressure during the Kargil debacle two years ago - told AAR that "the Afghan situation is different and not something that can be resolved by just putting pressure on Pakistan." The spokesman added, "there has to be commitment inside Afghanistan to a real peace process and the establishment of a broad-based government."

Surprisingly, the Pakistani media and those outlets that reflect the Pakistani government's views were quiet during Massoud's European visit. But after his return to Afghanistan, Pakistan's establishment analysts lashed out, and with propaganda-laced comments tried to denigrate the Afghan leader's maiden voyage to the West and define his role as "a minority figure." The Taliban, furious and unrepentant after the world dismissed them as cultural vandals for having destroyed Afghan relics and statues with impunity only a few weeks ago, warned that the EU should stay neutral and not jeopardize future peace efforts. In spite of such claims, the militia and its allies are said to be preparing for a major assault on opposition forces in coming days.

Get the picture?? If anything, US support to Massoud was lukewarm, at best... Whereas the Taliban vented their wrath on EUROPE, not the US!! Yet another discrepancy in the official Bin Laden theory: why didn't Al-Qaeda hijack EUROPEAN airliners? Why didn't they carry out their kamikaze operations in Europe --in retaliation for Europe's ostentatious support to Massoud?
