January Effect: This is still December.
I'm probably not the person to whom you're referring, but the action so far has generally met my expectations. Based on recent history and the positions of my leading indicators, there's a good chance that the current mild rally will peak on Thurs or Fri for the broad Market. Re the Nasdaq's perfect record on Dec 31st, we could see traders and hedge funds push us up into the final morning of the year, with no objections from the large institutions who want to avoid looking any worse when they report year-end NAVs. It wouldn't surprise me to see a late day Nasdaq sell-off on the 31st, however, as traders and hedge funds take short-term profits.
Looking out a few weeks, the outlook is still basically neutral, with a likelihood of a short-term early Jan sell-off, but nothing serious.
