"So what Chris and I said were both belittling, as I said?"

I did not detect a mocking tone in the Chris's statement that you refered to, although I have only read a fraction of his postings. He emphasised that it was not his conscious intent to mock anyones belief. He apologized to anyone who may have taken it that way.

His comment was to have those who didn't believe as he does to benefit anyway. I have a hard time seeing a well wisher as mocking. I am a believer and wouldn't consider it mockingly belittling if you through a penny into a wishing well and wished good fortune for me. If you stated your hope that the unseen forces of nature currently unraveled by science inquiry would comfort me, even though I didn't show proper regard for the principles of scientific research; That would be just fine.

If you told me that you wanted some stone sculpture that you prayed to to straighten out my views on the human condition I would feel a little annoyed and disrespected. I am wondering if this is similar to how you took Chris's comment.

If you jokingly dismissed the premise on which my views on life are founded with no regard for the products of such; I would see it as an attemp to make something small and insignificant, which I know as overwhelmingly enormous and absolutely essential to life's purpose....and to rub my nose in it....belittling, definitely belittling.
