you misunderstood my first point -- namely the false impression perpetrated by our media that the Euro-welfare state is so extravagant compared to the US's -- this making their economy inferior to ours

But your response makes a good point: it will be hard to keep up that perception under the euro.

I have to laugh when you mention the "soaking of the Euro" by the underground economy. What does that have to do with anything?

By the rest of your reasoning applied to earlier years the dollar never would have become the world's reserve currency in the first place -- the success of the currency does not depend largely on everyone agreeing with each other on economic issues -- simply requires that they find advantages in doing their business in the given currency vs. another.
