I wouldn't put it that simply, which is why I went to great lengths to illustrate how I view the situation.

Wishing well, guiding one toward further consideration, and expressing hope for another's betterment could hardly be considered belittling if the expressions were sincere(not claiming to know who is sincere and who is not). Using a mocking tone while expressing a lack of concern about the other's view can easily be taken as dismissive and belittling. Sarcasm as well as other ploys can also be used as a technique to shock someone into thoughtful consideration and so should not necessarily be termed belittling even though a mocking tone and lack of directness or guidence might be employed (still not claiming to always know what is intended). You copped to intending a belittling shot. Chris did not and asked for further consideration on his remarks.
