Yes, that seems to support my position on this although not exactly in line with the the fuller picture.

If I were the student, I would be scrambling for a copy of the "Crito" (what ever that is). Ahh, and now having done a quick search I find that it is Plato's dialogues and comments on Sacraties which I studied briefly, thirty some years ago. Well anyway, I would feel guided to make further inquiry and consider the philosophical issue from another perspective. This would be true even if the teacher only intended to point out that my understanding was inadequate and had no regard for my well being. It could be both belittling and encourage me to self improvement regardless of the intent behind the comment. I have, infact benefitted by considering the comments of atheists/ignostics such as Solon, X, and others without first needing to know where intentions lie.

So now are we creating a taxonomy of belittling comments? Those which could guide one to betterment vs those which are simply dismissive?

Kholt had the position that your comment and hers were in essence the same. My regard was that they did not appear to be of the same belittling nature.
