cjac,

Probably the best way to start learning to use Windows 98 is to use Windows Help. Click on "Start", then "Help".

I see you have used Macs before. On the Help "Content" tab, Click on "Introducing Window 98", then "If You're New to Windows 98" and then "Tips of Macintosh Users". Also under the Contents tab, click on the "Getting Started Book: Online Version". This is the same as the printed Getting Started Book that comes with Windows 98.

I have read several of the Dummies books and found them to be a good way of learning. But since you are already familiar with the Mac, you should find it easy to use Windows 98. Just keep using the built in Help facilities (context related help is usually available by pressing the F1 key). If you get stuck, there are lots of people right here on the Computer Learning thread that are more than willing to help you.

I have used Juno for several years and found them to be good for email and light Internet browsing. One advantage of Juno is that you avoid some of the email viruses that access Microsoft's address book.

Juno is also free and has a lot of phone numbers that you can use to access your email and the Internet. You will not be charged for local phone calls, but be sure that the connection phone number that you select is a local call. Local Measured calls and Extended Calling Areas will cost you. Check with your phone company (I used the phone directory to determine if a phone number is really local).

If you are a heavy Internet user, you might want to try their premium service, it's cheap, but not free. If you only surf the Internet for a couple of hours a day, the free service should be sufficient. Currently I have a cable modem, but I can still access my Juno email without charges.

<How do I determine if I have the orignal programs loaded on my drive or 'extra' copies?> If you have the original program disks (or CDs), you probably have the original programs. Ask your son.

Hope this helps.

B.K.

The best free ways to learn about 98 (other than this thread <gg>) are to use your help files and to get familiar with a good search engine. Many of the folks on this thread use Google. Just type in a few keywords that you think will lead you toward your answer and go. Here's the page I got looking for windows 98 tutorials.

Here are a few of those links that look pretty good.
